Physical fitness is armor for equestrians. The wear and tear inflicted on the rider can cause performance problems. A rider relies on physical structural to stabilize on an animal. Horseback riders engage their internal core to stabilize so the horse can move without restriction underneath the rider. Equestrians use their physical armor to stay steady and balanced on their horse but also the armor helps prevents any negative force inflicted from the sport itself.
Every athlete has individual physical restrictions and/or limitations with natural deterioration. Physical fitness increases muscle symmetry and increase range of motion in the joints. This will help the overall well being of the body in the present and the future. When one regularly rides a horse, physical issues can magnify themselves and a rider starts to struggle with basic things like sitting the trot.
Any aliment, pain or discomfort that presents itself should be considered a threat to the performance as a horseback rider. Athletes that train to ride can increase muscle density, joint mobility and core stability by working out. Fitness increases the athletes physical armor.
Physical imbalances develop over time and cause structural compensations in a riders peak performance. Equestrians sit in a saddle on the horse and as it moves, a rider must stay centered and mobile with the horse\’s movement. Being in shape to ride isn\’t a certain weight but rather can the athlete support the weight they have. Muscle that can\’t physically handle the workload will result in structural support failure so it\’s important that a rider account for the weight they bring to the partnership.
Being in shape to ride means support one\’s body weight while moving on a horse. The horse will compensate for the lack of support from their rider. This can cause fluidity to be slightly off because of the delay in the rider\’s core stability. Now the horse will have to adjust their stride to compensate for their rider. A horse can tell when it\’s rider has to reconfigure their balance or when it\’s rider is running out of steam. If the horse has to compensate for it\’s rider daily, this will become a habit for the horse. Some horses are more devilish than others resulting in more work for the rider, fatiguing the already tired rider.
Equestrian want a horse to move at it\’s best natural gait and get high scores and a long lasting career. When the core and endurance of the rider matches their animal, there\’s potential for higher performance within that partnership.

Bridget took the system a step further by using her riding experience and NFPT certification, customizing an online program for the individual needs of horseback riders. Her desire is to provide best possible equestrian workouts and rehab solutions, to keep riders riding for life!
Bridget is also the resident Dressage Trainer at Sterling Farms in Bonsall, CA. Currently working with Steffen Peters and Conrad Schumacher to improve her own riding education. She has received her USDF bronze, silver and gold medals.
